Netting Project Material—Exercises

IMPORTANT
It is extremely important that you set up and work within your own site to maintain your data integrity. If you work within any other site, you will compromise your own exercise data as well as the data of other students. Predictable exercise results require that your data be isolated in your own site.

Basic Data Setup

Inventory Location

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to show you how to create an inventory location for the receipt of material into inventory. Material in both the standard and project inventory will be held in this inventory location.

  1. Create the following new inventory location at your site XX01, where XX is your initials.

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the data that must be in place before you can perform the main exercise below.

  1. For an activity or activities in your subproject structure, register a demand for both standard planned and  project-specific miscellaneous inventory parts.
  2. Save your changes.

  1. Release the activities which have connected miscellaneous demand which will be netted.

Receiving Inventory Parts

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the data that must be in place before you can perform the main exercise below.

  1. Receive standard planned inventory parts into your site's standard inventory, using your inventory location L1.
  2. Use the same inventory to receive a quantity of the project specific part you want to net. Once this is done, Go to Inventory Part In Stock window and query for this part for the project site. Select this record, and then right-click and then click Transfer to Project Inventory. In the dialog that appears, select from the list of values the Project ID, Sub Project ID and Activity ID, then the Quantity to Transfer, and then click OK.

Main Exercise

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to show you how to net project material to meet the miscellaneous demands of the project.

Netting Project Material

  1. Open the Project Navigator window.
  2. Query for your project.
  3. In the Navigator, select the activity or activities which have registered miscellaneous demands (for both standard planned part and project specific part) for which you would like to net the quantity required.
  4. Click the Demand tab, and then click the Misc. Parts tab.
  5. Check that the Netting check box-column for the demand line is selected automatically by default.
  6. Go back to the Navigator and select the top node. Right-click, point to Netting and then click Net Project Material. You can either run netting on-line or as a background job. Click OK.
  7. Click the Reserved Material tab and check that full or part of the required quantity (depending on availability) has been automatically reserved for the miscellaneous demands.
  8. Go back to the Misc. Parts tab and check that the Reserved Quantity column has been updated with the quantity that has been automatically reserved for the miscellaneous demand.
  9. Click the Activity tab, and on the Cost tab, observe that the Committed column has been updated for the netted standard planned part. This value is based on the current part cost for the reserved items.
  10. Verify that these values update the correct cost elements, based on how you set up the posting control rule M62 and cost element mappings.
