Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the data that must be in place before you can perform the exercises below.

Main Exercise

Purpose: The purpose of these exercises is to show you how to execute activities in general. First, you will release activities to be able to start executing. Then this lesson will show you how to complete and close activities.

Releasing Activities

Note: Do the following steps to release the desired activities.

  1. Open the Project Navigator window. (Alternatively, open the Activity window.)
  2. Query for your project.
  3. In the Navigator, select the activity that you wish to release. (Alternatively in the Activity window, select the desired activity in the Project list.)
  4. Click the Activity tab. (Alternatively in the Activity window, click the General tab.)
  5. To release the activity, right-click anywhere in the tab, point to Status and then click Release.
  6. A question appears asking if you would like to release the activity. Click Yes.
  7. Click the Details tab. (Alternatively in the Activity window, view the General tab.) Note that the system date has been entered as the date for release.
  8. To release other activities, repeat steps 3-6.

Completing and Closing Activities

Note: Once the work has been performed on an activity, do the following steps to complete the activity. No new work may be started on a Completed activity, but you may finish any work in progress and create financial transactions.

  1. Open the Project window. (Alternatively, open the Activity window.)
  2. Query for your project.
  3. In the Navigator, select the activity that you wish to complete. (Alternatively in the Activity window, select the desired activity in the Project list.)
  4. Click the Activity tab. (Alternatively in the Activity window, click the General tab.)
  5. To complete the activity, right-click anywhere in the tab, point to Status and then click Complete.
  6. A question appears asking if you would like to complete the activity. Click Yes.
  7. Note the status shown in the Status field.
  8. Observe that the early finish date has been entered as a default value in the Actual Finish Date field.
  9. Optionally, enter another value in the Actual Finish Date field. Save your changes. Note that the early finish date is set equal to this revised actual finish date. Note also that the Early Finish Date field is no longer revisable.
  10. Click the Details tab in the Project Navigator/Activity tab. Note that the system date has been entered in the Completed status date field.
  11. To complete other activities, repeat steps 3-6.

Note: When all the financial transactions related to the activity have been created, do the following steps to close the activity.

  1. In the Project Navigator Navigator, select the activity which you wish to close. (Alternatively in the Activity window, select the desired activity in the Project list.)
  2. Click the Activity tab. (Alternatively in the Activity window, click the General tab.)
  3. To close the activity, right-click anywhere in the tab, point to Status and then click Close.
  4. A question appears asking if you would like to close the activity. Click OK.
  5. Note the status shown in the Status field.
  6. Click the Details tab in the Project Navigator/Activity tab. Note that the system date has been entered in the Closed status date field.
  7. To close other activities, repeat steps 12-15.
