Handling Serial Numbers on Shop Orders—Extended Exercises

IMPORTANT
It is extremely important that you set up and work within your own site to maintain your data integrity. If you work within any other site, you will compromise your own exercise data as well as the data of other students. Predictable exercise results require that your data be isolated in your own site.

The fuel system for the racing engine is a manufactured serialized part with one serialized component and other non-serialized components. The serial numbers for the fuel system are generated manually. You want to create the following shop orders and reserve the serial numbers for the shop orders prior to actual production and receipt.

Reserving a Single Serial Number for a Shop Order

  1. Open the Shop Order window and create a new shop order on your site for the 21-250 part with a lot size of 1. Save the information.
  2. Record the shop order number (the value in the Order No. field) that was automatically generated so that it will be easy for you to query for your shop order later.
  3. Right-click anywhere in the header, and then click Reserve Serial No.
  4. When the Reserve Serials for Shop Order window displays, click New to create the serial number.
  5. Enter a serial number value for your part. To make it easy to later query for the serial number, prefix the number with your initials.
  6. Click OK to save the serial number and return to the Shop Order window.
  7. Save the information in the Shop Order window to save the serial number reservation.
  8. Click the Tracking tab and verify that the serial number you entered for your part is in the Serial Begin and Serial End fields.

Note: The Receiving Reserved Serial Structures on Shop Orders exercise continues the processing of this shop order.

Reserving Multiple Serial Numbers for a Shop Order

  1. Open the Shop Order window and create a new shop order on your site for the 21-250 part with a lot size of 10. Save the information.

Note: The serial numbers generated can have either a prefix, a suffix, or both added to the generated set of sequential numbers. Decide what you prefer. The generated numbers do not keep any leading zeros. To have leading zeros, the zero characters must be added manually. The serial numbers are stored in the IFS Applications system as alphanumeric values.
