Entering Document Survey and Requirements—Exercises

IMPORTANT
It is extremely important that you set up and work within your own site to maintain your data integrity. If you work within any other site, you will compromise your own exercise data as well as the data of other students. Predictable exercise results require that your data be isolated in your own site.

Basic Data Setup

Document Class and Document Requirements 

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to set up the basic data required for manually entering a document survey and document requirements.

  1. If you have not already done so, create the following document class, as shown below, substituting your initials for XX: 
Doc Class Description
XX–DC001 Engine document 001
  1. If you have not already done so, create a new document requirement, as shown below, substituting your initials for XX: 
Doc Reqmt ID Description
XX–DR001 Engine document requirement 001
  1. Connect the XX–PD001 document class to the the document requirement
  2. Save your changes.

Creating a Project Product Structure

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the data that must be in place before you can do the the exercises below.

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to enter a document survey and connect some documents to a project item used in the project product structure.

Entering Document Requirements and Connecting a New Document

  1. Open the Project Product window and query for your project XXPD–01.
  2. On the Items tab, select the row containing part 20–10XX (Engine 1600) and go to Attachments panel.
  3. On the Attachments panel, click Document Requirements.
  4. Add a document requirement by right-clicking and then clicking Copy Requirements.
  5. In the dialog box that opens, click List and click the document requirement ID XX–DR001 you created in the previous exercise, and then click OK. Note that this document requirement has the document class XX–DC001, which you connected to it in the exercise above.
  6. You can manually add a document class to a document requirement from the List of Values. Try to do this and select the same document class XX–DC001. What happens when you try to save it? 
  7. Click the Documents link.
  8. Create a new document by right-clicking and then clicking New.
  9. In the dialog box that opens, click List and click the document class XX–DC001 you created above, type the title "Document for Special Engine", and then click OK.  
  10. Check the result. Note that you can also manually insert an existing document by right-clicking and then clicking Attach.
  11. Open the Project Item window and query for your project XXPD–01 and part 20–10XX.
  12. Click the Total Doc. Survey and Total Doc. Req. tabs and verify that they display what you just connected in steps 4–9.
