Create Milestone Template

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the data that must be in place before you can perform the exercises below.

  1. Create a milestone template and define a design status for a milestone.

Main Exercise

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to show you how to execute a design object to update cost and progress on a connected activity.

Executing Design Object

  1. Open the Project Connections page which holds the record for the design object you created and connected in a previous exercise. Observe that the design status of the object is Under Design.
  2. Verify that the Project and Total Planned Cost and Total Planned Hours fields hold values.
  3. Verify that the Milestone fields hold values. Observe that the Milestone Number is 10 and the Cumulative Progress is 0%.
  4. Return to the Project Navigator page populated with your project.
  5. Select the relevant activity in the Navigator and click the Activity tab and observe that the values retrieved to the Planned column are based on those just entered for the design object and placed against the correct cost element. Also observe that the Calculated Progress is the same as the Cumulative Progress on the design object.
  6. Open the Design Object page and query for the design object you created in a previous exercise.
  7. Right click in the window, click Status and then click Set Completed.
  8. Click the Project Data tab and observe the Milestone fields. Observe that the Milestone Number is 50 and the Cumulative Progress is 100%.
  9. Go back to the project activity that has been connected to the design object. Observe that the value retrieved to the Calculated Progress field is based on the design object progress value associated with the selected milestone.
  10. Observe that the Earned Value fields have been updated is based on the calculated progress progress value and the planned values from the design object.
