Receiving Shop Orders Automatically—Key Exercises

IMPORTANT
It is extremely important that you set up and work within your own site to maintain your data integrity. If you work within any other site, you will compromise your own exercise data as well as the data of other students. Predictable exercise results require that your data be isolated in your own site.

Basic Data Setup

Discrete Manufacturing Overview Racing Engine

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to create the required data that will be used in the Discrete Manufacturing exercises. This sets up data for your site that only needs to be done once for Discrete Manufacturing course exercises.

  1. If you haven't done so already, set up your site for discrete manufacturing of racing engines.

Inventory Location

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to set up inventory picking locations for running functionality isolated by site.

  1. If you haven't done so already, create the inventory picking locations shown in the table below.

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to verify that you have enough parts to complete the main exercises.

  1. Verify that you have at least the quantity of parts shown on the table below available for manufacturing. If you do not, receive the indicated quantity of the parts into inventory picking locations.

General exercise for Receiving Inventory Part

Shop Orders

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to create shop orders to be used in the main exercises below.

Windows:
Shop Order

  1. Create a shop order for each of the parts shown in the table below, specifying the indicated quantities.
  2. Record the shop order numbers so that it will be easy to identify the correct shop order for each main exercise.
  3. Issue all the component material needed for each shop order.
  4. Report all the operations on each shop order.

General exercise for Creating Shop Orders Manually

Main Exercises

Purpose: The purpose of these exercises is to process completed material on a shop order by receiving it into inventory and processing the shop order to the closed state. This closed state is the final state that a shop order can be processed and it indicates that the produced inventory has moved into an inventory location.

Windows:
Shop Order

You want to receive cooling systems from shop orders using automatic receiving. The following shop orders exist:

Automatically Receiving a Shop Order with Auto Close

You want to receive the cooling systems and automatically close the shop order.

  1. Open the Shop Order window and query for the shop order for this exercise. If you did not record the shop order number, query for your site, part number 21-240 and a quantity of 5. The shop order should have a status of Started with all operations completely reported and all material completely issued.
  2. Click the Detail tab, and verify that there is no value in the Proposed Loc field. Verify that Auto Close is the value selected from the Code list in the Auto Close area.
  3. Right-click anywhere in the header, point to Material Actions, and then click Receive
  4. Click Yes to confirm that you want to receive all remaining material.
  5. Click OK to acknowledge that the part must have a default location.
  6. In the Detail tab, enter 1A in the Proposed Loc field. Save the information.
  7. Right-click anywhere in the header, point to Material Actions, and then click Receive
  8. Click Yes to confirm that you want to receive all remaining material. The receipt process will automatically receive all 5 of the 21-240 parts into inventory location 1A. 
  9. Verify that the value for the State field in the shop order header is Closed and the value of the Products field on the Detail tab is Completely Received.

Note: If there is a default location defined for the part in inventory, the Proposed Loc field would default to that value and use it as the location to automatically receive inventory. If the Proposed Loc field does default to a location and you want to automatically receive the inventory into another location, you can change the field's value to specify another location. 

Automatically Receiving a Shop Order with Manual Close

You want to receive the cooling systems and manually close the shop order.

  1. Open the Shop Order window and query for the shop order for this exercise. If you did not record the shop order number, query for your site, part number 21-240 and a quantity of 10. The shop order should have a status of Started with all operations completely reported and all material completely issued.
  2. Click the Detail tab, and enter 1A in the Proposed Loc field. Select Manually Close in the Code list in the Auto Close area. Save the information.
  3. Right-click anywhere in the header, point to Material Actions, and then click Receive
  4. Click Yes to confirm that you want to receive all remaining material. The receipt process will automatically receive all 5 of the 21-240 parts into inventory location 1A. 
  5. Verify that the value for the State field in the shop order header is Started and the value of the  Products field on the Detail tab is Completely Received. The shop order is ready to close manually.
