Setting up the Part Catalog—Creating a Part Record

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to view the part record for the primary part and create a part record for the alternate part.

Windows:
Part

  1. Open the Part window and query for part no. 20-121, Cylinder Head Cover 1600. This is the primary part.
  2. Create a new record and enter 20-131 in the Part No field. In the Description field, enter Cylinder Head Cover. This will be the alternate part.
  3. On the General tab, enter PCS in the Unit field and 3 in the Std. Name ID field.
  4. Save the record.

Setting up the Part Catalog—Defining Engineering Part Revisions

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to view the part revision of the primary part and create two alternate part revisions.

Windows:
Part/Part Detail
Engineering Part Revision

  1. Open the Part window and query for part no. 20-121, Cylinder Head Cover 1600.
  2. Click the Engineering tab and then the Part Detail tab. The latest revision shown in the Current Revision field is R01.
  3. Query for part no. 20-131, Cylinder Head Cover, in the Part window header.
  4. Click the Engineering tab and then the Part Detail tab. In the Current Revision field, enter R01.
  5. In the Part Class field, enter 20. In the Provide Code list, select Buy. In the MPL Part list, select Demand.
  6. Save the record.
  7. Open the Engineering Part Revision window and query for part no. 20-131, Cylinder Head Cover.
  8. Right-click in the header and then click Create New Revision. The Register New Revision dialog box opens.
  9. In the New area, enter R02 in the Revision field.
  10. In the Journal Note field, enter Updated per Customer Specification.
  11. Click Finish.

Setting up the Part Catalog—Defining Alternate Parts

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to connect an alternate part to a primary part.

Windows:
Part/Alternate Parts

  1. Open the Part window and query for part no. 20-121, Cylinder Head Cover 1600.
  2. Click the Alternate Parts tab and create a new record.
  3. In the Alternate Part No field, enter 20-131 or select it from the List of Values.
  4. The Fully Interchangeable check box is selected by default. Leave it that way.
  5. Save the record.

Main Exercise

Defining Alternate Part Revisions

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to connect two alternate part revisions to the current part revision of the primary part.

Windows:
Engineering Part Revision

  1. Open the Engineering Part Revision window and query for part no. 20-121, Cylinder Head Cover 1600.
  2. Click the Alternate Part Revisions tab.
  3. Right-click on the Alternate Part Revisions tab and then click Copy Alternate Parts from Part Catalog. The Copy Alternate Parts from Part Catalog dialog box opens.
  4. Click New.
  5. In the Alternate Part No field, enter 20-131 or select it from the List of Values.
  6. In the Alternate Part Rev field, enter R01 or select it from the List of Values.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Part no. 20-131, Rev R01, is now shown on the Alternate Part Revisions tab as a valid alternate part revision to part no.20-121, Rev R01.
  9. Save the record.
  10. Right-click on the Alternate Part Revisions tab and then click Copy Alternate Parts from Part Revision. The Copy Alternates to 20-121 – R01 dialog box opens.
  11. Click List and select part no. 20-131, revision R02.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Part no. 20-131, Rev R02, is now shown on the Alternate Part Revisions tab as another valid alternate part revision to part no.20-121, Rev R01.
  14. Save the record.
