Replace Serial

Explanation

This activity is used to replace a serial in a serial structure. Before a serial can be replaced in a serial structure, observe the following guidelines for more accurate replacement of the serial.

• A serial with an operational status of Planned For Operation can be replaced with a serial that has any of the following operational statuses: Planned For Operation, In Operation, Out Of Operation.
• A serial with an operational status of In Operation or Out Of Operation can be replaced with a serial that has any of the following operational statuses: In Operation, Out Of Operation.
• A serial with the operational status Scrapped cannot be used to replace another serial.
• The serial to connect cannot be locked.
• A serial can only be replaced with the same prime part or with one of its alternates (position or template alternate). If an alternate is to be replaced, it can be replaced with the same part number or another alternate, i.e., an alternate to the part being replaced. Note that when you are performing a replace, the rules of interchangeability will not apply to serials that are Planned For Operation, i.e., the serials can be replaced with any prime parts or any valid alternates defined for the structure position to be replaced. If access control is established, you can only replace the serials to which you have access. Establishing access control is done by assigning a user to an access group defined in basic data. The access groups will be used to extend access to all or selected parts and serials in a structure. When a serial is removed from a serial structure, you can specify the access rights you want to keep for it. You can select to either keep the current access rights for the serial, update the serial with the default part access, or select the access groups you want to keep for the replaced serial.

Prerequisites

• A disconnected serial with the correct status and configuration must exist. A serial can only be installed in a serial structure whose configuration (serial structure template) allows it to be installed. This means that a part number or revision combination not existing (as prime part or alternate) in a level in the serial structure template cannot be installed in this level in the serial structure, and vice versa. For more information, refer the activity Define Template Part.
• If you want a location code to be displayed automatically when performing a structure change on a work order, the location code must be connected to the workshop to which the work order is distributed. This should be done in the Serial Basic Data/Location Code per Workshop tab.

System Effects

• The disconnected serial is installed in a serial structure, while the replaced serial is no longer in a serial structure. A replacement historical record will be created.
• If the serial installed is defined as an alternate with interchangeability rule Qualified Interchangeable, the alternate must be approved before the operational condition for the structure can be set to Operational. For more information, refer the activity Approve or Reject Structure Change
• If the installed serial is part of the minimum configuration and has the Non Operational operational condition, the parent serial of the structure in which it is installed will also receive the Non Operational operational condition.
• If the structure change is performed from a work order, a mismatch record will be created if the removed serial is not installed in the parent serial.
• If the structure change is performed from a work order, a mismatch record will be created if the installed serial is installed in another serial.
• The disconnected serial will receive the current access rights by default, or the specified access groups defined for the serial. 
• If the Print Serviceability Tag check box is selected, the serviceability tag is printed for the serial being replaced. The tag can be included with the serial when it is kept in a facility. Serviceability tag refers to the tag used in the Aviation industry to clearly identify an uninstalled component or assembly and its current status. The serviceability status is automatically determined by the system based the operational status and operational condition of the serial. Therefore,
  • If the operational status of the serial is Scrapped, the serviceability tag is printed with the Scrapped serviceability status.
  • If the operational condition of the serial is Operational, the serviceability tag is printed with the Serviceable serviceability status.
  • If the operational condition for the serial is Non Operational, the serviceability tag is printed with the Unserviceable serviceability status.

Procedure

Use this procedure to replace a serial in a serial structure:

1. Open the Serial Structure Information window and query (F3) for the necessary structure.
2. In the graphical object structure, select the serial that is to be replaced, right-click, point to Structure Changes, and then click Replace Serial. The Replace Serial assistant opens.

Note: This assistant can also be opened from the Consist Of tab, by right-clicking on a serial record, pointing to Structure Changes, and then clicking Replace Serial. When you are working in this tab, and need to move down the structure, select the required serial record, right-click and then click Next Level until the structure level on which the serial to be replaced is displayed.

1. Serial information for the structure in which the serial is to be replaced appears automatically in the Remove or Swap from area.
2. In the Structure Pos field, the structure position in which the serial is to be replaced is displayed. If needed, this value can be changed. Click List to select a value.
3. The values in the Part No/Rev and Serial Number fields appear automatically.
4. In the Location Code field, enter the location in which the disconnected serial (as a result of the Replace) is to be placed. Click List to select a value.
5. If needed, in the Oper Condition list, select a new operational condition for the serial that is to be replaced in the structure.
6. In the Install or Swap into area, enter the part number of the serial that you want to replace in the Part No/Rev field. Click List to select a value. When you enter a value in this field, the values in the Serial Number and Inst. Date fields appear automatically.
7. Select the Print Serviceability Tag check box to order and print the serviceability tag report for the serial being replaced. Note: If the value of the PRNT_SERVICE_TAG_ACS object property in System Definition/Object Property is set to TRUE, this check box will be selected by default. The value of this check box can be changed, if needed.
8. In the Workshop field, enter the workshop responsible for replacing the serial. Click List to select a valid value.
9. If you want to connect replacing of a serial to a task, click List to select a valid value for the Task Number field.
10. In the Str. Change Date field, enter the date and time the structure change is to be performed.
11. Select the Unscheduled Removal? check box if this structure change is to be an unscheduled removal.
12. Select the Keep Current Access? check box, in the Update Access Group Information area, if you want the serial that is to be replaced to keep its current access rights. This check box will be selected by default. Clear this check box if you do not want the replaced serial to keep its current access. When this check box is cleared the Default Access Groups? check box will be made available.
13. Select the Default Access Groups? check box, if you want the replaced serial to keep its part access. This check box will be selected by default. Clear this check box if you want only a selected number of access groups to keep the part access when the serial is replaced.
14. Select the Run in Batch? check box if you want access rights for the replaced serial to be updated through a batch job.
15. Click Next.
16. The Select Access Groups assistant step opens. In this step, you can select the access groups you want to keep for the replaced serial.
17. The values in the Part No/Rev and Part Description fields appear automatically and cannot be updated.
18. Clear the Implement For check box for the access groups you do not want to keep when the serial is replaced.
19. Click Finish.
20. The Print Report dialog box opens.
21. Verify that the print settings are correct. Click Preview if you want a preview of the serviceability tag report prior to printing.
22. Click Print. You can click the printer button on the preview window as well.
23. Verify that the structure change has been performed and the report printed.

Use this procedure to perform a structure change, i.e., replace serial, on a work order in IFS/Work Order Management:

1. Open the Report In Work Order window and query (F3) for the desired work order.
2. Click the Operations tab.
3. Right-click on the required operation line, and then click Perform Structure Change. The Structure Changes - Select Action assistant step opens.
4. Select Replace Serial and then click Next. The Replace Serial assistant step opens.
5. Serial information for the structure in which the serial is to be replaced appears automatically in the Remove or Swap from area.
6. In the Structure Pos field, the structure position in which the serial is to be replaced is displayed. If needed, this value can be changed. Click List to select a value.
7. In the Location Code field, enter the location in which the disconnected serial (as a result of the Replace) is to be placed. If a location is connected to the given workshop, this location code will appear automatically in the field. If not, click List to select a valid location code.
8. If needed, in the Oper Condition list, select a new operational condition for the serial that is to be replaced in the structure.
9. Select the Print Serviceability Tag check box to order and print the serviceability tag report for the serial being replaced. Note: If the value of the PRNT_SERVICE_TAG_ACS object property in System Definition/Object Property is set to TRUE, this check box will be selected by default. The value of this check box can be changed, if needed.
10. The workshop to which the work order was distributed appears automatically in the Workshop field. If necessary, you can change to another workshop using the List of Values.
11. In the Str. Change Date field, enter the date and time the structure change is to be performed.
12. Click Finish.
13. The Print Report dialog box opens.
14. Verify that the print settings are correct. Click Preview if you want a preview of the serviceability tag report prior to printing.
15. Click Print. You can click the printer button on the preview window as well.
16. Verify that the structure change has been performed and the report printed.

Use this procedure to perform a structure change, i.e., replace serial, on a work order in IFS/Work Order Management using the Single Page Report In Work Order page.

1. Open the Single Page Report In Work Order page.
2. Query for the work order (F3).
3. Click Place Serial in Structure. The Place Serial in Equipment Structure for Work Order window opens.
4. Click List to select a part number for the serial to place and click OK.

Use this procedure to perform a structure change, i.e., replace serial, to the structure of the vehicle on which the fault was reported:

1. Open the Flight Log window and populate (F2) or query (F3) for your flight log number and/or serial.
2. Click the Fault tab and select the relevant fault number from the Fault Number list.
3. Right-click and click Perform Structure Change. The Structure Changes - Select Action assistant step opens.
4. Verify that the Replace Serial option is selected and then click Next. The Replace Serial assistant step opens.
5. Continue with steps 3 to 25 described in the in the first procedure listed above.
