Activate Modification Revision

Explanation

This activity is used to activate the new revision of a modification. When all definitions for a modification have been entered the modification can be activated. Note: Only one revision of a modification can be active at any point of time. Therefore, the existing active modification revision is set to the Obsolete status when a new modification revision is activated. When this occurs, the selection of the Supersede Rule check box will control the serials that have already complied with the superseded (replaced) modification. If this check box is selected, the serials that have complied with the superseded modification and the serials that have the value To Be Performed on its superseded modification will also get To Be Performed for the new modification revision. If the check box is not selected, the serial does not have to comply with the new modification revision. If the previous modification revision was not complied with, then the new modification revision will be complied with.

If the Keep Perform Modification Definitions check box is selected for the modification revision being activated, the Perform Modification changes (i.e., serial assignment) will be copied from the old revision to the new revision, provided that the modification category is the same for both revisions and there are no references to a different modification. These changes can be seeing in the Perform Modification field in the Modification Details/Assign Serials tab. Note: This check box cannot be selected together with the Supersede Rule check box.

When the modification is activated, serials are assigned to the modification and a due calculation is performed. If the due dates are within the time period specified in the Days Forewarning field, new pending tasks are generated in the system. 

If the modification work will result in a part identity change on an assigned/affected serial, the serial will be renamed to include the new part number and revision once the modification is embodied. In order to successfully perform the rename of a serial, the new part number and revision for the serial must have been entered on the modification (i.e., in the Change to Part Number and Change to Part Revision fields). For more information refer to the activities Assign Part Revision to Modification and Enter Affected Parts. When the modification is activated, the system will perform a check to validate the following information:

• the new part number is a valid alternate of the old part number
• the maintenance program for the old part number is valid for the new part number
• the manufacturer of the old part number is valid for the new part number (i.e., when a new manufacturer and manufacturer part number have not been entered)

A warning message is generated if the new part number is not a valid alternate or if the maintenance program is not valid for the new part number. You are recommended to read through this message before continuing with [or canceling] the activity. You will not be allowed to activate the modification if the manufacturer is not valid for the new part number. Note: These validations are also performed when a new part number is entered for the assigned/affected part.

If PMC tasks have been generated as a result of complying a modification revision, these PMC tasks will remain on the modification when a new revision is activated. Whether these PMC tasks should be executed or removed, needs to be decided.

Prerequisites

• A modification must have been defined. This modification must be in the Preliminary status.
• One or more parts and part revisions must have been assigned to the modification.
• If the assignment type of the modification is By Serial Range, at least one serial range must have been defined for each part number.
• A terminating action must have been defined for each part number or revision assigned to the modification if either the Next Visit in Workshop or Next Interval Maintenance has not been specified.
• If the modification leads to a part identity change, the new part number and revision must have been entered for the serial. These values can be entered in the Define Modification/Assign Part Revisions tab or the Modification Details/Affected Parts tab.
• If a new structure position is being introduced by the modification (i.e., as a structure impact), this structure position must have been added to the template structure.

System Effects

• The modification revision is set to the Active status.
• If another revision of the modification already exists in the Active status, it will be set to the Obsolete status when the new modification revision is activated.
• Serials are assigned to the modification and a due calculation is performed.
• If the Keep Perform Modification Definitions check box is selected, serial assignment will be copied to the new revision.
• If a serial is locked, it will not be assigned to the modification.
• If the modification task is due within the specified Days Forewarning, a pending task is created.
• If the modification leads to a part identity change, the new part number, revision and manufacturer data will be validated when activating the modification revision.
• A warning message is generated when the new part number is not a valid alternate.
• A warning message is generated when the maintenance program for the old part number is not valid for the new part number.
• An error message is generated when the manufacturer and manufacturer part number is not valid for the new part number.
• An error message is displayed if the new structure position being introduced by the modification has not been added to the template structure at the time of activating the modification revision.

Procedure

1. Open the Define Modification window and query (F3) for your modification that is in the Preliminary status.
2. Right-click anywhere in the header, point to Status and then click Set Active.
3. The Activate Modification dialog box opens.
4. If you do not want to update the modification baseline in a background job, clear the Update Baseline in Background check box.
5. Click OK to close the dialog box and activate the modification revision.
