View Document in External Viewer—Extended Exercises

Required Data

This exercise requires that you have an external viewer installed on your computer. You can, for instance, use Microsoft Internet Explorer as a viewer. How this or any other viewer is set up is explained under User Settings below.

Basic Data Setup

User Settings

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to set up the external viewer required for running this particular functionality.

Windows:
User Settings

  1. Open the User Settings window.
  2. Place the cursor in the External Viewer Application field.
  3. Click Browse and select the external viewer application (in this case Internet Explorer). If you do not know the path, you can use the Find function in Microsoft Windows to locate the viewer application.
  4. Click OK and close the User Settings window.

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to show how to use an external viewer.

Viewing a Document with an External Viewer

Sometimes, it can be more convenient or efficient to use an external viewer rather than the original application. It can be very time consuming, for instance, to start an AutoCad session or install the application in the first place.

  1. Open the Document Revisions window. 
  2. Query for the search criteria shown below.
Document Class Title Revision
100 Factory Layout A1
  1. Select the document. Then right-click, point to File Operations, and click View Document.
  2. In the Select Document Type to View window, select the External Viewer check box.
  3. Click OK.

Result: The external viewer application you selected should open and display the document.
