Creating Serial Part—Exercises

Main Exercise

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to learn how to create new parts ready to be used for building template structures and serial structures for IFS/VIM (IFS/Vehicle Information Management). This exercise starts with creating engineering parts that takes place in IFS/PDM-Configuration, but as this is a fundamental part of the total process, this has been included in the IFS/VIM exercise and the engineering parts being created will be used throughout the whole course.

Create Engineering Part

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to create a new part that can be used in part structures. In the exercises you will register parts for a new simplified nose landing gear (without wheels).

Windows:
Engineering Parts

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps.

  1. Open the Engineering Parts window.
  2. Create new part records as shown in the table below. Use your student number as the part number prefix (example 5X32NLG7001 for student 5). Use the Create New Engineering Part wizard to create three of the parts. (Open the wizard by right-clicking on the window and then clicking Create New Part

Note: Next you will link the revision * of each part to the manufacturer part number.

  1. In the Engineering Parts window, select the records again, right-click, and then click Engineering Part Revision Info. The Engineering Part Revision window will open containing your part revision records. The revisions for each part should be *.
  2. For each part revision, click the Manu. Part Revisions tab and enter a record for the manufacturer and manufacturer part number that should be linked to this engineering part revision. Save each record as you create it.

Create Part Revision

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is make a new revision of an existing part number. Revisions of a part are sometimes interchangeable. New revisions can be created from engineering part level or from an existing part revision.
