Initial Exercises—Manage Master Configuration

Initial Exercises

Purpose: The purpose of these initial exercises is that the instructor will use them for demonstrating the basic functionality when creating new parts and structures to be used in IFS/Vehicle Information Management (IFS/VIM). In this example, we will design a new wheel revision for the 747-900 aircraft series. The exercises cover these sub-processes:

IMPORTANT
These initial exercises are intended for instructor use.

If you are a student, it is extremely important that you set up and work within your own site to maintain your data integrity.

Define Serial Part Information

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to introduce you to the basic functions of defining necessary serial part information after the serial part has been created in IFS/PDM-Configuration.

Prerequisites: The previous exercise must have been completed.

Windows:
Serial Parts

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps.

  1. Open the Serial Parts window.
  2. Query (F3) for the new rim part, and enter the following additional data:
Part Number Part Description Vehicle Part Life Limited Part
X32RIM7014 Rim half Not Checked Life Limited
  1. Save the information (F12).
  2. Select the record for the part, right-click and then click Serial Part. Click the Operational Parameters tab. Enter the following additional data:

Define Template Structure

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to introduce you to the basic functionality for creating serial structure templates in IFS/VIM. In this example we will create a template for the new wheel.

Prerequisites: The previous exercise must have been completed.

Windows:
Serial Structure Template
Template Structure Navigator

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps.

  1. Open the Serial Structure Template window.
  2. Create new a template for part number X32WHE7002, revision A.
  3. Specify Part Number X32WHE7002 and Rev A.
  4. Save the record (F12).
  5. Click the Consist Of tab, create new records and enter the data shown on the following table (you have to enter two separate rows for the rims, each with a different position):
Part Number Rev Part Description Configured in Separate Template Minimum Configuration Quantity
    X32TYR7008 * Tire Not Checked Checked 1
X32RIM7014 * Rim half Not Checked Checked 2
    X32MNT7003 * Mounting Kit Checked Checked 1
  6. Open the Multilevel tab to see the structure of the template. Right-click to move Up and Down in the structure.
  7. Open the Template Structure Navigator window.
  8. Query (F3) for Part Number X32WHE7002 - Wheel Assy, Revision A.
  9. Open the graphical structure and examine data by clicking on the parts.
  10. Right-click, point to Status and then Set Active.

Define Alternate Part in Template

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to show you how to define a template alternate for a template structure. In this exercise, we will define the new revision A of the wheel assembly, to be an alternate in the aircraft's X747-900 revision T. The template alternate will be used as an alternate anywhere the original part appears in the template structure of aircraft X747-900, revision T.

Prerequisites: The previous exercise must have been completed.

Windows:
Serial Structure Template

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps.

  1. Open the Serial Structure Template window.
  2. Query (F3) for the part number X747-900, revision T.
  3. Click the Alternates tab and then click the Template Alternates tab.
  4. Create a new record, and specify the part number X32WHE7002, revision A, as a two-way interchangeable alternate for part number X32WHE7002, revision T.
  5. Save the record (F12).

Define and Connect Users to an Access Group

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to show you how to create the required basic data for access control in IFS/VIM. To establish access control, access groups must be defined. Users will be defined per access group, and the access group will later be defined per template structure and its serials.

Windows:
Establish Access Group

  1. Open the Establish Access Group window.
  2. Create a new record (F5).
  3. Enter the access group ID SYSOWN and a valid description.
  4. Save the information (F5). When the new access group is saved, the application owner and the logged on user will automatically become members of the access group.
  5. Create a new record in the table of the window (F5).

  7. Save the information (F12).

Grant Access Rights on Parts and Serials

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to show you how to grant (spread) access rights for the parts and serials of a serial structure template. Parts are not access controlled. Access rights are stored on parts and control belonging serials.

Prerequisites: Requires that the previous exercise has been completed.

Windows:
Serial Structure Template
Template Structure Navigator
Template Part
Template Parts

  1. Open the Serial Structure Template window.
  2. Query (F3) for the active template part number X747-900 and for the revision value indicated by an asterix (*).
