Assortments—Exercises

IMPORTANT
To the students: It is important that you set up and work with your own parts to maintain your data integrity. Otherwise you will compromise your own exercise data as well as the data of other students.

Basic Data Setup

Enter Part

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to enter parts that you later will use to create an assortment.

Windows:

  1. In the Part window, enter a number of parts, for instance XX1 to XX20. Instead of XX, use your initials.
  2. General exercise for Part

Main Exercise

Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to create and modify an assortment.

Windows:
Assortment

  1. In the Assortment window, enter an assortment and a description.
  2. In the Assortment Levels tab, enter the levels you want to have in your assortment.
  3. In the Structure tab, select a node, right-click and then click Create Sub Nodes. Create as many sub nodes as you want. Make sure not to use the same ID for your nodes as the ones you used for your parts. It is not allowed to use the same node ID several times in the same assortment.
  4. Select a new node, right-click and then click Create Sub Nodes. Create as many sub nodes as you want.
  5. Continue in this way until you have an assortment that is as wide and as deep as you want. Create an assortment that has at least three branches on the second level.
  6. At the bottom of each branch, select a node, right-click and then click Connect Parts. When you connect parts, a so called part node is automatically created for each of your parts with the part number as node ID. These part nodes are connected as sub nodes to the current node. In the Connect Parts dialog box, you can list parts in different ways: 1) Enter a part number. 2) Select one by clicking List. This will list all parts from part catalog but you can only choose one part at a time. 3) Click Query Parts. This will list all parts from part catalog. Now you can click Query to query for specific parts in the part catalog. Select one or several of the parts in the list.
  7. Alternatively, you can choose to create a part and connect that part at the same time. At the bottom of a branch, select a node, right-click and then click Create and Connect Parts. Enter part number XX21, description, and unit of measure; click OK. The part is created in part catalog and connected to the selected node.
  8. Select a node in the Structure tab. In the Node Information tab, you can see if the node is connected to a part. In this tab you can also see on what level the current node is placed in the structure. The system automatically sets the correct level for a node.
  9. If the structure you created is deeper than expected, you can simply add levels in the Assortment Levels tab.
  10. Select a node in the Structure tab; select a node that has sub nodes. Delete this node and all its sub nodes by right-clicking and then click Delete Node.
  11. Select a node in the Structure tab; select a node that has sub nodes. Move this node and all its sub nodes to another node in your structure by using the drag-and-drop technique.
  12. To see the whole structure again, select the top node and then right-click and click Expand Descendents.
  13. To search for a specific part in an assortment, enter your search criteria in the Part No field in the Search area and click Find. You may use wild cards such as _ or %.
