Initial Exercise

Purpose: The purpose of this Design Standard Product initial exercises is that the instructor will use them for demonstrating the basic functionality in Design Standard Product, which entails:

These initial exercises are intended for instructor use.

If you are a student, it is extremely important that you set up and work with your own part no.s to maintain your data integrity. If you work with any other part no, you will compromise your own exercise data as well as the data of other students.

Establish a new part

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the basic functionality of creating Engineering parts.

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps in the sequence shown.

IFS Racing develops three types of engines for racing cars. To build these engines we need a carburetor which has not yet have been created as a engineering part. You should help IFS Racing by creating this part.

  1. Open Engineering Parts.
  2. Press New (F5).
  3. Enter the Part Number as 20-999.
  4. In Std Name ID field, open the List of Values (F8). Select the Std Name ID where the value of the Standard Name is Car.
  5. In the Part Description field, enter Carburetor.
  6. In the Provide Code field, note that the code is Make.
  7. Save (F12).

Build a Product Structure

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the basic functionality of building a product structure.

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps in the sequence shown.

 

IFS Racing is developing engines for racing cars. These engines consist of a number of items in different levels. You should help IFS Racing to build the product structure for one of their engines by adding the carburetor to the structure.

  1. Open Engineering Part Revision.
  2. Query for the part 20-100.
  3. Click the Consists Of tab.
  4. Click New (F5).
  5. In the Sort Code field, enter 50.
  6. In the Part Number field, enter 20-999.
  7. In the Part Revision field, use the List Of Values (F8) and select the revision as R01.
  8. In the Drawing Position field, enter 5.
  9. In the Quantity Per Assembly field, enter 1.
  10. Save (F12)
  11. Click the Revision tab.
  12. Right click and click Engineering Part Revision. This window contains the Consists Of tab. In this window you can view the structure graphically.
  13. Query for the part 20-100. You will then see the top and second level in the graphical navigator.
  14. In the graphical navigator, right click and click Expand Descendents.
  15. You will now see the entire structure in the graphical navigator.

Create a new part revision

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the basic functionality of creating a new part revision

Windows:
Engineering Part Revision/Revision (RMB Create New Revision)
Engineering Parts (RMB Create Revision)

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps in the sequence shown.

 

IFS Racing is developing engines for racing cars. In one of their products there is a small difference depending on which car the engine is mounted in. You should help IFS Racing to create the new revision of the engine block.

  1. Open Engineering Part Revision.
  2. Query for part 20-110 engine block.
  3. In the Revision tab, right click and click Create New Revision.
  4. In the Revision field, enter R02.
  5. In the Journal field, enter Bolt size M14 used for mounting engine in car type 2.
  6. Click Finish.

Note: When accessing this function in Engineering Parts (RMB Create Revision) you need to replace step 1-3 with the following steps in the sequence shown.

  1. Open Engineering Parts.
  2. Query for part 20-110.
  3. Select the row for the part, right click and click Create New Revision.

Note: To view the information entered in the Journal above, perform the following steps.

  1. Open Engineering Part Revision.
  2. Query for part 20-110 and Revision R02.
  3. Open the Journal tab.
  4. View the information.

Replace Part Revision

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the basic functionality of replacing a part revision.

Windows:
Engineering Part Revision/Revision (RMB Replace Part/Revision)

 

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps in the sequence shown.

 

IFS Racing is developing engines for racing cars. In one of their product structures there has been a change. You should help IFS Racing to replace the revision of that part.

  1. Open Engineering Part Revision.
  2. Query for part 20-110, revision 1.
  3. In the Revision tab, right click and click Replace Part/Revision. This will start the Replace Part/Revision wizard. In the first step you will see the part/revision to be replaced at the top and the part/revision to be replaced with at the bottom. The top fields are not editable.
  4. In the bottom field Revision press the List button and select R02.
  5. Click Next.
  6. This will open step 2. Here you will see all the different structures that use the part you are replacing. Quick menu buttons at the right allow you to make pre-selected choices. You can also select by manually selecting the Engineering Part Replace check box.
  7. Manually select the part displayed by selecting the Engineering Part Replace check box.
  8. Click Next.
  9. In field Journal enter Bolt size M14 used for mounting engine in car type 2.
  10. Click Finish.
  11. Open Engineering Part Revision.
  12. Query for part 20-100.
  13. Open the Consists Of tab.
  14. Note that the revision has changed to R02 for part 20-110

Print Product Structure

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the basic functionality of printing a product structure. Both single and multiple level structures are covered

Windows:
Engineering Part Revision/Revision
Engineering Part Navigator/Revision

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps in the sequence shown.

 

IFS Racing is developing engines for racing cars. These engines consists of a number of items in different levels. You should help IFS Racing to print a single level product structure report.

  1. Open Engineering Part Revision.
  2. Query for part 20-100.
  3. Open the Revision tab.
  4. Right click and click Reports/Product Structure/Single Level.
  5. Check the information displayed in the Order Report dialog box (Part Number and Part Revision). 
  6. Click OK
  7. In the Report Print dialog box click Preview. You will now be able to view the print-out on the screen.

Note: If you want to print out the report choose a printer and click OK.

Modify Product Structure

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the basic functionality of replacing a part in a structure

Windows:
Engineering Part Revision/Revision (RMB Replace Part/Revision)

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps in the sequence shown.

 

IFS Racing is developing engines for racing cars. In one of their product structures there has been a change. The valves must be changed. You should help IFS Racing to replace these parts.

  1. Open Engineering Part Revision.
  2. Query for part 20-123 valve.
  3. In the Revision tab, right click and click Replace Part/Revision. This will start the Replace Part/Revision wizard. In the first step you will see the part/revision to be replaced at the top and the part/revision to be replaced with at the bottom. The top fields are not editable.
  4. In the bottom field Part Number click the List button and select part no. 20-124.
  5. Click Next.
  6. This will open step 2. Here you will see all the different structures that use the part you are replacing. Quick menu buttons at the right allows you to make pre-selected choices.
  7. You can also select by manually selecting the Engineering Part Replace check box.
  8. Manually select the part displayed by selecting the Engineering Part Replace check box.
  9. Click Next.
  10. In the Journal field, enter Valve replaced.
  11. Click Finish.
  12. Open Engineering Part Revision.
  13. Query for part 20-100.
  14. Open the Consists Of tab.
  15. Note that the part no. 20-123 has been replaced with part no. 20-124.

Verify and Release Engineering Part Revision

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the basic functionality of releasing a part and its product structure.

Windows:
Engineering Part Revision

Steps: To complete this exercise, perform the following steps in the sequence shown.

  1. Select the manufactured top part 20-100 and check to see whether the Structure is OK in the Development Status tab. If not, activate your structure. To activate a part and its structure, select the part 20-100, right click, click Status and then click Set Active
  2. Now you need to release all the parts in the structure. This is done by selecting the part(s) from bottom and up in the multilevel tab, right click, click Status and then click Release.
  3. When all requirements are fulfilled (all 4 checkboxes are checked, and the Parts tab is empty when Show Remaining is selected), the top part can be released.
  4. Go to the Revision tab, right click, click Status and then click Release.
