Required Data

Purchased Inventory Part

Purpose: The purpose of this exercise is to show you the required data that is used in the exercises below. You will connect your characteristic template to this part and then query for specific characteristics.

You can either enter the inventory part or copy it from Site 1.

Main Exercises

Purpose: The purpose of these lessons is to enter characteristic codes, using both variable and discrete values, and then connect them to characteristic templates, i.e., define relevant measurements and group them. You will then connect the characteristic templates to parts.

IFS Racing purchases and stores racing wheels with tires. These parts differ in overall diameter, bead diameter, and whether they have beadlock.

Entering Characteristic Codes

Variable Characteristics

  1. Open the Part Characteristics window.
  2. Click the Variable Characteristics tab and create a new record (F5).
  3. Enter your first variable characteristic, using the values from the table below. Replace XX with your initials.
  4. Save your entry (F12).
  5. Repeat steps 1-3 for the other variable characteristic.

Discrete Characteristics

  1. Click the Discrete Characteristics tab, and create a new record (F5).

Note: The cursor must be in the Characteristic Code field when creating a new record.

  1. Enter the values from the table below in the header, replacing XX with your initials.
  2. Save your entry (F12).

  1. Select a row and then create a new record (F5).
  2. Enter the first characteristic value, using the values from the table below.
  3. Save your entry (F12).
  4. Repeat steps 4-6 for your second characteristic value.

Entering a Characteristic Template

  1. Open the Part Characteristic Template window.
  2. Create a new record (F5).

Note: The cursor must be in the Characteristic Template field when creating a new record.

  1. Use your initials as the ID for the template. Enter an applicable description, for example, your name.
  2. Save the record (F12).
  3. Click the Variable Template Characteristics tab, select a row, and create a new record (F5).
  4. Select your first variable characteristic code by using the List of Values. Select mm (millimeter) as the unit of measure, using the List of Values.
  5. Save your entry (F12).
  6. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for your second variable. Use mm (millimeter) as the unit of measure.
  7. In the Discrete Template Characteristics tab, select a row and create a new record (F5).
  8. Enter your discrete characteristic by using the List of Values. Do not enter any unit of measure.
  9. Save your entry (F12).

Connecting the Characteristic Template to an Inventory Part

  1. In the Inventory Part/Characteristics tab, select your characteristics template by using the List of Values.

Note: Do not create a new record.

  1. In the Variable Characteristics tab, enter the Attribute Value for your variables. XX-BD (Bead Diameter) 330 and XX-OD (Overall Diameter) 660, replacing XX with your initials. In the Discrete Characteristics tab, enter the Attribute Value BL (Beadlock) by using the List of Values.
  2. Save your entry (F12).

Querying by Characteristics

  1. In the Find Inventory Part by Characteristics Analysis window, select your characteristic template and click Next.
  2. You can now see your discrete characteristic. In the Value Text field, enter BL and click Next.
  3. You can now see your variable characteristics. In the Value field, enter 330 as Bead Diameter and 660 as Overall Diameter. Click Next.
  4. You can now see the results of the search. The window displays all inventory parts with these characteristics. If several inventory parts are displayed, select your inventory part. Click Next.
  5. You can now see all attributes for the selected inventory part. Click Finish.
