Creating a User-Defined Base Unit of Measure

In this exercise you will create the unit rpm (rounds per minute), which will be used when measuring the revolution of race car engines. This new, user-defined, unit will be set as a base unit, which means other units can be derived from this unit.

  1. Open the Units Of Measure window.
  2. Populate the window and review the ISO units that are selected to be used in this system environment (i.e. the units that you selected in the Define Used ISO Codes exercise).
  3. Create a new row.
  4. Enter the following information into the row:
Unit Code Description Factor Base
 Unit
Unit Type User
Defined
rpm rounds per minute 1 Not Used Yes

Note: By leaving the Base Unit field empty, the new unit will become a base unit itself.

  1. Save the new unit.

Note: This new unit of measure will be visible also in the ISO Code Usage window under the Unit Of Measure tab.
