Printer Definition—Key Exercises
Main Exercises
Purpose: The purpose of these exercises is to demonstrate
how printers are managed and connected to users and/or reports in IFS
Applications.
Windows:
Printer Definitions
Defining a New Logical Printer
To connect printers to users and/or reports, the printers must
first be registered under the Logical Printer tab. In this exercise you
will define two new logical printers.
- Open thePrinter Definitions window.
- Click the
Logical Printer tab.
- Create two new table rows and enter the information shown on the following
table.
Printer ID |
Description |
10 |
Laser Printer first floor |
20 |
Laser Printer second floor |
- Save the new logical printers.
Note: The printer ID entered in this window is connected to a physical
printer when installing IFS Print Server.
Defining a Report Printer
By connecting reports to specific printers, you can specify which printer you want to print out a specific report. In this exercise you
will connect one of the printers that you defined earlier to a standard
report in IFS Applications.
- Click the
Report Printer tab.
- Create a new table row.
- Place your cursor in the Report ID field and open the List Of
Values.
- Review the available reports in your environment.
Note: The reports available depend on the modules that are
installed in your IFS environment.
- Perform a query in the List of Values, using the search criteria shown in
the following table. (This query will result in a report
displaying information about installed modules and components.)
Report ID |
Module |
MODULE_REP |
FNDSER |
- Select the row that displays as a result of the query and click OK
to enter your selection into the window.
- In the Available Printer list, click printer 10.
- Set the printer as the default printer by selecting the check box in the Default
field.
- Save the connection.
Note: After you have completed the above steps, when a user prints the selected report,
the system
automatically will use printer number 10.
Defining a User's Printer
In this exercise you will connect a user to two different printers
(the printers you defined earlier). By doing so, the user will be able to select
which printer to use. One connected printer will be set as the default.
- Click the
User Printer tab.
- Create a new table row.
- In the User ID field, enter ALAIN.
- In the Available Printer list, select printer
10.
- Duplicate this row by clicking the Duplicate icon or F6.
- In the Available Printer list, change the printer by clicking 20.
- Set this printer (20) as the default by selected the check box in the Default
field.
- Save the new connections. Alain will now be able to choose between these two printers
when printing out a report. Printer 20 always will be suggested, since it is
the default printer.
Note: The rules defined under in the
Report Printer tab
override the rules in
this tab. So if Alain decides to print out the MODULE_REP report, the report
will be printed on printer 10 because of the rules that you entered in the
previous exercise.
Defining a Report User Printer
In this exercise you are going to define some exceptions from the rules that
you have defined in the exercises above. In this case you are going to connect
both a specific report and a specific user to a printer.
Note: The rules defined under this tab will override the rules
entered under the two other tabs (User Printer and
Report Printer).
- Click the
Report User Printer tab.
- Create a new table row.
- Place the cursor in the Report ID field and open the List Of
Values.
- Review the available reports in your environment.
Note: The reports available depend on the modules that are
installed in your IFS environment.
- Perform a query in the List of Values,
entering the search criteria shown in the following table. (This query will result in a report
displaying information about installed modules and components.)
Report ID |
Module |
MODULE_REP |
FNDSER |
- Select the row that displays as a result of the query and click OK
to enter your selection into the window.
- Place the cursor in the User ID field and open the List Of Values.
- Perform a query to locate Alain Prost. Click Query and
enter Identity = ALAIN for the search criterion.
- Select Alain from the list and click OK to enter his
user ID into the window.
- In the Available Printer list, select printer 20. (This is one of the printers that you created in
a previous exercise.)
- Set this printer as the default printer by selected the check box in the Default
field.
- Save the new settings.
Note: When Alain decides to print out the MODULE_REP
report, printer 20 automatically will be selected. This rule overrides the
settings you made in the
Report Printer tab, where the default printer
for this specific report was set to printer 10.
