Create Serial

Explanation

This activity is used to create a serialized part. Serialized parts are uniquely identified and followed up over time. If you, for the time being, do not have all the information needed to fulfill the registration, you can start and divide the procedure into several steps to postpone the completion. When you enter a serial number you also have to enter the values that will update the Part Serial Catalog with information on the new serial.

When a new serial is created, the next level of the serial structure will be created automatically with empty structure positions in the Serial Structure Information/Consist Of tab. Empty structure positions, also called Not Installed structure positions, refer to the structure positions where expected serials or parts are missing from the serial structure. You can identify which structure positions are empty by the value of the Item Installed check box. If this check box is selected, the structure position contains an expected part or serial. If not, the structure position is an empty structure position. The purpose of creating empty structure positions is to provide a means by which you can quickly view where components are missing when building a serial structure.

All the access groups assigned to the serial part can be viewed in the Serial Structure Information/Access tab. If the serial is access controlled, only the users assigned to the access groups that have the Has Access check box selected, can view and update information on the serial. When a new serial is created, the following will occur in relation to the Access Control feature:

• The serial will receive the access groups assigned to the template structure to which the serial belongs.
• If the new serial is defined within a structure, the serial will inherit the serial access groups from the topmost serial of the structure. If the serial is not installed in a structure, it will receive the access defined for the part number and revision of the serial.
• If the parent of the new serial does not have a serial number, the serial will inherit the access from the nearest parent that has a serial number, from the structure. If the parent parts in the structure do not have a serial number, the serial will inherit the access defined for the part number and the revision of the serial. 

When the serial is in either the In Operation or Out Of Operation status, a maintenance program must be defined for the serial on the Serial Structure Information/General tab. 

Prerequisites

• A serial template structure must exist for the utilization of the part.
• Part number must be a valid engineering part revision and coupled to a manufacturer.
• The part number must be associated to a maintenance group and a repair workshop.
• The access groups must have been extended to the current serial. 

System Effects

• The serial is created and made maintenance aware for fleet utilization.
• The next level of the serial structure (based on the template structure) is created automatically with empty structure positions.
• You can identify holes in the structure, i.e., where serial parts are missing from the structure.   
• All access rights defined for the current serial will be updated on the Serial Structure Information/Access tab.
• Serials that do not have defined access groups can be viewed by all the users.
• The access rights for the serial can be updated by using the right mouse button options on the Serial Structure Information/Access tab.

Procedure

To create a new serial:

1. Open the Serial Structure Information window or the Serial Structures window and create a new record (F5).
2. Enter the desired part number and revision in the Part Number and Part Rev fields. Use the List of Values to select a valid value.
3. In the Serial Number field, enter a unique serial number.
4. In the Vehicle ID field, enter a unique vehicle identification number. Note: A value in this field can only be entered for parts defined as vehicle parts.
5. Click the General tab.
6. The value of the corresponding template appears automatically in the Template Part No field when a part revision is selected. If there is no value in the Template Part No field, use the List of Values to select the template structure to which the new serial will belong. 
7. Enter the structure position of the template part by selecting a value in the Structure Position field. Use the List of Values to select a value.
8. In the Part Serial Catalog area, enter values in the Manufacturer No, Mfr's Part No and Owner Org fields. Use the List of Values in the respective fields to enter valid values.
9. If the manufactured date of the serial is known, enter this date in the Mfd Date field.
10. In the Ownership list, select the type of ownership for the new serial.
11. If a maintenance program is available for the serial, enter this in the Maint Prog ID field. Use the List of Values to select a valid maintenance program revision.
12. In the Maint Group field, enter the maintenance group. Use the List of Values to select a valid value.
13. In the Workshop Code field, enter the primary workshop for the serial. Use the List of Values to select a valid value.
14. In the Location Code field, enter the current location of the serial.
15. Save the record (F12). The serial will be created with the status Planned For Operation.

To update the access groups for the selected serial

1. Open the Serial Structure Information window, and query (F3) for the serial number of the part you created in the above procedure.
2. Click the Access tab. All access groups inherited by the selected serial will appear on this tab. The access groups that currently have access to the serial, will have the Has Access check box selected.
3. To either select or clear the Has Access check box, use the following right mouse button options 

• Revoke Access Group for Serial - Select this option if you want to clear the Has Access check box, and thereby deny access to the new serial by the selected access group.
• Grant Access Group for Serial - Select this option if you want to select the Has Access check box, and thereby give access to the new serial by the selected access group.

Note: The data on this tab can only be updated for serials that are disconnected from a structure and for the topmost serial of a structure.
