Connect Template to Template

Explanation

This activity is used to connect an existing sub structure within a template structure to another template. The purpose of doing this would be to standardize the configuration of certain equipment types, and also to reduce the number of configurations for a single piece of equipment. This functionality is very similar to the activity Create Template from Sub Structure, the only difference being that this function reuses an existing template structure.

When an existing sub structure is connected to another template, the existing sub structure will be discarded and the template structure to which it is being connected will take over the configuration. To prevent the creation of invalid serial structures, the structure positions of the old parts need to be entered (in the Mapped Old Structure Position field in the Map Structure Positions when connecting Template to Template dialog box) to match the structure positions of the parts in the new template. All serial structures that are based on this structure branch will be converted according to the new template. If the new template includes a new position, an empty structure position will be added automatically to all the serial structures using the new template. If the new template removes a structure position, you need to manually remove the corresponding serials from the serial structures before proceeding with this action.

Prerequisites

• The template structure you want connected to another template must exist. 
• The template to which the template structure is to be connected to must exist.
• The template structure you choose to connect cannot be connected to another template.

System Effects

• The existing sub structure will be discarded.
• The template structure it is pointing to will take over the configuration.
• Serial structures based on the structure branch will be converted to the new template.
• If the new template includes a new structure position, the system will add an empty structure position to all serial structures using the new template.
• If the new template removes a structure position, the system will remove all empty structure positions for the removed position from all serial structures using the new template.

Procedure

1. Open the Serial Structure Template window and query (F3) for the template structure that is to be connected to another template.
2. Click the Consist Of tab. Note: In this window, you can also use the Multilevel tab to perform this procedure.
3. Select the row that contains the structure branch you want connected to the other template, right-click and then click Connect Template to Template.
4. A warning message is displayed and requests approval of the selection. Click OK.
5. The Map Structure Positions when connecting Template to Template dialog box opens.
6. The structure of the template you are connecting to is now displayed in this dialog box.
7. You need to map the structure positions of the existing structure with the structure positions of the template you are connecting to. To do this, select a value in the Mapped Old Structure Position field for each record that is displayed. Click List to select a value. This mapping ensures that all existing serial structures are correctly updated with structure positions according to the new template structure.
