Copy Part Data
Explanation
This activity is used to copy part information from one
part to another.
This may be useful for copying part information in many
instances. For example,
you might be sourcing
parts with similar specifications produced by several different manufacturers.
In this instance, you can use the
Copy Part dialog box to copy
everything,
except the manufacturer data,
and create new parts.
Notes:
- It is possible to copy information within the same
site or between different sites.
- You can copy the information onto new or existing
parts. The original part (From Part) is specified in the From Part No field, and
the part onto which you are copying (To Part) is entered in the To Part No
field.
- You can effectively use the
Copy Part
dialog box to specify exactly which information it is that you want to copy.
This information is specified right down to the tabs of part windows, and is
listed out in the Part Information to Copy field.
- If the part to be copied is one that already exists, certain information
to be copied might already be available on its records. This existing part
information will not be replaced by the part information to be copied from
the From Part.
Prerequisites
- Part information to be copied should exist in the From Part
records.
- Part information to be copied should not already exist in
To Part records.
- If the To Part is new (i.e., if the part does
not exist, and needs to be created during the copying process), all
of the
Enabled check boxes against the part catalog information must be
selected.
System Effects
- If you have not selected an existing part in the To
Part No field, a new part will be created.
- Selected part information will be copied.
- If the planner is blocked for use, the planner will be fetched from the
default value specified in the
Sites per User tab.

Procedure
- Open the Copy Part dialog box.
- Enter the number of the original part in the
From Part No field.
- Enter the site of the original part in the From Site
field. (The default site for the user will be displayed initially)
- In the To Part No field, enter the number
of the part onto which you are copying data. This may be a new or existing
part. In the adjacent field, enter an appropriate description for the copied part.
- Enter the site of the copied part in the To Site
field. (The default site for the user will be displayed initially). Use wild
cards to copy the same part
to many sites.
Information that can be copied from the From Part to
the To Part, is listed out under the Part Information To Copy column.
By default, the check boxes in the Enabled column would be selected for
most of the part information.
Note:
- If you had used the Copy Part dialog box, the Enabled check box
will be selected for the part information that you copied last.
- If you had not used the
Copy Part dialog box before, the
Enabled check box will be selected for a standard set of part
information (which can also be obtained by clicking Default).
- Select the Enabled check boxes against the
part information that you want to copy. Make sure you clear the Enabled
check boxes against part information that you do not want to copy, but have
been selected by default.
- If you want the selected information to be copied as
a background job, select the Background Job check box.
- There are certain features that ensure the
effectiveness of the copying process:
- If the part to be copied is one that already exists, certain information
to be copied might already be available on its records. This existing part
information will not be replaced by the part information to be copied from
the From Part. To keep check of such
situations, you can select the Cancel if Copy Exist check box against
required part information; the entire copying process will be halted, and you
will be informed that this information already exists.
Note:
If you don't select the Cancel if Copy Exist check box, the copying process will simply continue.
Though existing
part information will still not be overwritten, but you will not be informed of
the discrepancy.
- Certain part information selected in the Part Information to Copy
column might not sometimes exist in the From Part. To keep check of such
situations you can select the Cancel if
Original is Missing check boxes against the relevant part information.
- Click OK to copy the selected part information.
- A message will appear, asking whether you want to
make another copy. Click Yes to go back to the
Copy Part
dialog box with your most recent check box settings. Click No to complete copying and close the
dialog box.
