Create Milestone Template

Explanation

This activity is used to create a milestone template. A milestone template can consist of one or more milestones. Each milestone is defined with percentage values and these values will be used to set the progress of a design object. For example, a milestone can be defined with a cumulative progress of 100% which can be used when work is complete on a design object.

The following conditions need to be fulfilled when you define a milestone on a milestone template:

• The progress and duration values for the milestone need to be between 0% and 100%.
• The duration needs to increase in accordance with the progress.

Furthermore, it will be possible to automatically update milestone values when the design status of an object changes. The following example illustrates this in detail:

Assume a milestone template X(X) exists and includes a milestone numbered 4. This milestone is defined with a progress percentage value of 100% and the Set Completed design status. This milestone template is connected to the design object Y(Y). When the status of the object is changed to Set Completed the milestone 4 will appear automatically on the object.  

If a milestone exists with a progress value of 0%, the milestone value is automatically updated on the object when the status is set to the Redesign status. If this milestone does not exist the progress will not receive any value (NULL) when the status of the object is changed to Redesign.

System Effects

• A milestone template and connected milestones are created.
• Relative progress is calculated.
• Defined milestones are available in the List of Values where milestones are applicable.
• If a value has been defined in the Design Status Change field for a milestone number, when this change in the design status has been performed for a design object, the milestone number on a design object will be automatically updated with the milestone number in Milestone Number field.

Procedure

1. Open the Milestone Template window.
2. Click New.
3. Enter an identity and a description for your new template in the Milestone Template and Description field.
4. Click Save.
5. Click New on the lower table of the window.
6. Enter a milestone number in the Milestone Number field.
7. In the Description field enter the description of the new milestone number. .
8. In the Cumulative Progress % field, enter the estimated percentage of the total work that will be performed when the milestone is reached.
9. In the Cumulative Duration % field, enter the estimated percent of total hours that will be performed when the milestone is reached.
   
   Note: A value appears automatically in the Relative Progress field and is calculated by the system. The values for the Cumulative Progress and Cumulative Duration fields in your template can be adjusted as required.
    
10. Optionally, you can select the design status change in the Design Status Change field, to automatically update the milestone number on a design object with the value in Milestone Number field, when this change in the design status has been performed for the design object. 
11. Click Save.
